Students hold top TU heads captive

KATHMANDU: Vice chancellor Madhav Raj Sharma, registrar Bhim Raj Adhikari and rector Surya Lal Amatya of the Tribhuvan University are under the custody of students affiliated to 13 student unions from 2:30 pm, Thursday in the TU central office. The students have said that would not free the top TU heads until they make a breakthrough in the row over the TU decision to hike fees for the Bachelors and Masters levels. Himal Sharma, chairman of ANNISU-R, said “We will not retreat from our act until the TU scraps its decision to hike fees.” However they have said that they would respect the fundamental rights of their teachers while they are in their detention.

The student unions and the TU officials have been at loggerheads ever since the latter decided to hike the fees of the Bachelors and Masters levels. The several rounds of talks failed to bear any fruit.
